about

I wrote this song just days after the sinking of the Ocean Ranger oil rig off the coast of Newfoundland on February 15, 1982.

lyrics

THE SINKING OF THE OCEAN RANGER

There were men there…
were boys there
How long will we recall
The cold Atlantic claimed them
The sea, she claimed them all
They were working for the oilmen
When the tragedy occurred
They were working on the Ranger
When they heard that fatal word

To your stations men, we’re ailing
The rig has lost her hold
We’re leaning bad, we’re failing
Be fearless men, be bold
There’s little hope of help now
Well it looks as though we’re sold
So goes the sad, sad story
The rest was never told

God knows life on an oil rig
Is a lonely way to go
The hours are long
The work is hard
The time it goes so slow
When you’re thinking of your family
And the next time you’ll be home
How sad, for the families
When they just don’t come back home

So if you’re working on an oil rig
Say a prayer for all these men
For their families, the wives they left
Their children, folks and friends
And when you’re thinking of your family
And the next time you’ll be home
Remember how the Ranger’s crew
No one - not one came home
